Complete Umrah Guide — Step-by-Step Rituals for Pilgrims
Whether you're performing Umrah for the first time or returning for another blessed journey, this comprehensive guide walks you through every step — from preparing your Ihram to completing the final Halq.
What Is Umrah?
Umrah, often called the "minor pilgrimage," is an act of worship in Islam that involves visiting Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and performing a series of prescribed rituals. Unlike Hajj, which has specific dates in the Islamic calendar (8th-13th Dhul Hijjah), Umrah can be performed at any time of the year.
The four essential pillars (Arkan) of Umrah are: Ihram (entering the sacred state), Tawaf (circling the Kaaba seven times), Sa'i (walking between Safa and Marwa seven times), and Halq or Taqsir (shaving or trimming the hair).
Step 1: Ihram — Entering the Sacred State
Ihram begins before you cross the Miqat — the designated boundary point. The five Miqat points are Dhul Hulaifah (from Madinah), Al-Juhfah (from Syria/West), Qarn al-Manazil (from Najd), Yalamlam (from Yemen), and Dhat Irq (from Iraq).
To enter Ihram: perform Ghusl (ritual bath), wear two white unstitched cloths (men) or modest clothing (women), apply only unscented products, pray two Rak'ahs of Sunnah, make the Niyyah saying "Labbayk Allahumma Umrah," and begin reciting the Talbiyah continuously.
Prohibitions during Ihram include: cutting hair or nails, using perfume, wearing stitched clothing (men), covering the face (women), hunting, and sexual relations.
Step 2: Tawaf — Circling the Kaaba
Upon arriving at Masjid al-Haram, perform seven complete circuits around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction, starting and ending at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).
Men should perform Raml (brisk walking) in the first 3 circuits and Idtiba (exposing right shoulder) throughout. At the Yemeni Corner, touch it with your right hand if possible. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, recite: "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina adhab an-nar."
Tip: During crowded times, use the upper levels or rooftop for a more comfortable Tawaf experience.
Prayer at Maqam Ibrahim & Zamzam
After completing Tawaf, pray two Rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim, reciting Surah Al-Kafirun in the first and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second. Then drink Zamzam water facing the Kaaba and make du'a.
Step 3: Sa'i — Between Safa and Marwa
Walk between Safa and Marwa seven times, starting from Safa. Climb each hill, face the Kaaba direction, and make du'a. Men should jog between the green markers. The total distance is approximately 3.15 km and takes 45-60 minutes at normal pace.
Electric carts are available for elderly or disabled pilgrims who cannot walk the full Sa'i.
Step 4: Halq or Taqsir — Completing Umrah
The final step: men should shave their head completely (Halq, preferred) or trim at least one inch (Taqsir). Women should cut a fingertip length from the ends of their hair. After this, all Ihram restrictions are lifted.
Congratulations — your Umrah is complete! Barber shops near the mosque exits charge SAR 10-30.
